Jane Smith ‒ talks about winning the Player of the Year award for 2001!

Exclusive Interview with Denise Klecker, the German Number 3

Denise Klecker is the Ruesselsheimer captain and has recently been part of the squad that won 2002 it's 11th European Indoor Clubs Championship.

Ruesselsheimer have now won the indoor Europeans 11 times – How many have you been involved in? Do you celebrate each one as if it is your first?  - It was my 10th European indoor Cup I  had won. It is great to win that Cup 10 times, but every Cup has his own story and team. I think, I celebrated this victory more than my first, but we have to concentrate for the next two weeks after the tournament, because we are playing in the German championship.

You have played against Slough many times indoor and outdoor – over the years, which player have you most admired in the Slough team? - I think, a team has to be a team to be good and Slough is a good team – in my opinion. So, I think it’s difficult to single out one player.

The last game between the two sides in Hamburg was closer than ever – do you think that English clubs are catching up with the standard of the German teams? - I think the whole international hockey does a lot to catch the German teams. In February 2003 we play the first Indoor World Cup in Leipzig/ Germany. England gets closer, but I hope you can not catch up before the World Cup.

Would you ever consider playing for another German team other than Ruesselsheimer? - Yes, because German players get no money. In Ruesselsheim especially we have to pay more than we get. We have fun and win together, that’s our payment. Half a year ago I wanted to chance to play at Hamburg or Cologne, but now I have a great job here in Frankfurt. I am working at the application documents for the Olympics games 2012 in Frankfurt RheinMain.

Would you play club hockey in another country? - Hmmm, I don’t know. I have very good friends in South Africa and when ever I will play for them. But really I think, I like to play hockey in Germany, in Ruesselsheim and the German Bundesliga.

What football team do you support? - The best. It doesn’t matter. I am not a big supporter of football. I like to play it by my own.

England v Germany football games are always closely fought - can you remember where you were when England beat Germany 5-1? - It is long ago. Before Ice Age or something like that.

What is your job? - I am working in Frankfurt. It is 30 Minutes ago from my home and there I do my best with a small team to get the Olympics Games 2012 or 2016 to Frankfurt RheinMain. It is a very funny and good team. Official I am working as Business Consultant at Andersen.

How do you balance hockey, work and a social life? - I do my best every day. My sport is my hobby, my work is my hobby and my social life is my hobby, so I enjoy the whole day only with hobbies.

How do you relax when you are not at hockey or work? - I have friends and a lot of fun with them. I like to lie in my bed and watch TV, read a good book, like to go to the cinema, to the pub or do some other sports.

What type of music do you listen to? - I have no special type of music. I listen to everything and anything.

How do you keep motivated to play so much domestic and international hockey? - I have fun and enjoy every minute of my practice and competition, that’s motivation enough.

At the next Olympics you will be 32.  Do you think you will be involved in the German team then?  How long do you think you will continue to play both international and domestic hockey? - I don’t know. Perhaps I stop after the World Cup international hockey or after the next Olympics. We will see. I think domestic hockey I will play much longer, but you know, if you gets older if my health would be okay for many years, I would like to play until I become a granny.

English hockey is subsidised by our National Lottery.  How is hockey funded in Germany – do players have to subsidise much of the costs of playing hockey themselves? - We have to pay like every “normal” player in Germany. As an international player we sometimes get a bit of money, but it is really only a bit. That money we get from the Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe. They support us how ever they can (with job hunting, physiotherapy, health care and so on).

If you weren’t a hockey player, what would you do – would you like to play another sport to the level you play hockey? - I think I would make something else, not sport especially. One of my hobbies is art and comics. I think I would work as a famous comic illustrator at Walt Disney.

Who is your most feared opponent both domestically and internationally? - My own team. I think sometimes we beat us by our self.

Which famous person are you most like and why? - Shrek. He is human and is lucky.

Which famous person would you actually like to emulate and why? - I like myself with all my trouble and bad an d good sides.

Quick Fire: - What do you prefer? Beer or Wine!!? - Weizen or Weissbier – it’s a kind of bier. Blonde or Dark? - Blonde Milk, White or Dark Chocolate? - Milk or White Cats or Dogs? - More Dogs than Cats, but both not really Giving or Receiving? - Giving Diet or Normal Coke? - I am a real woman – so COKE. Diet Coke I call “Girly lemonade”. Romantic Comedy or Action Film? - Animated films Flowers or Chocolates? - Both together is the best. - Listening to Music or Reading a Book? - It is dependent on my mood. Text or Phonecall? - I am happy to read or hear some words from my friends, but I like to write and like to phone. Sweet or Savoury? - I like every good food. Beach or Piste? - I never have really time to go on holiday, so I would like to have a holiday and than it doesn’t matter if it is on the beach or in the snow. Mornings or Evenings? - The whole day and night. Liverpool or Manchester United? - Now, you know I am not very interested in football, but one of my South African friends – Marie – is a big supporter of Manchester, so I would say: Manchester United.
